Antica Aquileia 3D (Virtual Aquileia) is a mobile app for iOS and Android that features innovative 3D augmented reality functions. Produced by Ikon and Nudesign for the Aquileia Foundation - the organisation that manages the archaeological heritage of the ancient Roman city of Aquileia - this app allows users to see the monuments on their devices (smartphones and tablets) and to visualise their 3D reconstruction interactively.
Aquileia was one of largest and most prosperous cities of the early Roman empire, until the arrival of Attila, in the 5th Century AD, who razed the city to the ground.
Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, the ancient city has been only partially excavated and presents in the main ruins of mosaic floors and traces of walled perimeters.
Antica Aquileia 3D combines 3D images, video and interactive exploration of the main monuments, allowing visitors to use their devices as "windows through time" and as interactive video guides. As they walk through the streets of the city, users receive information about the surrounding buildings and, most impressively, they can explore the virtual reconstructions of the buildings thanks to augmented reality.
