The creative universe of Luigi Spazzapan told through Virtual Reality

The "Words and signs of Spazzapan" project, conceived and created by IKON, aims to tell the artistic and personal evolution of the Gradican painter Luigi Spazzapan with the help of virtual reality.
The experience aims to transpose the artist's work from the two-dimensional view of his paintings to a three-dimensional and immersive world. The pictorial works, decomposed and reconstructed in 3D, form virtual landscapes that the user crosses accompanied by spoken texts taken from the autobiography of Spazzapan himself.
Commissioned by the Carigo Foundation, the project is available to visitors to the art gallery dedicated to the painter, in his hometown of Gradisca d'Isonzo.

The VR experience

The VR experience narrates the main moments of the training and artistic career that lead Spazzapan from Gradisca to Vienna, Munich, and Turin, highlighting the relationships, influences, and contaminations with the most important cultural and pictorial movements of the time.
The subjects, backdrops, lines, and colors come alive, and transform, giving life to a digital landscape around the user and allowing them to appreciate the painter's artistic and creative process in a dynamic and extremely immersive way. Thoughts drawn from Spazzapan's autobiography accompany the images, narrating both the political and personal events faced by the artist in the early twentieth century and outlining his profile, personality, and thoughts.

Technology

The technological and artistic challenge inherent in the realization of such a project is linked to the need to create a three-dimensional environment starting from two-dimensional works. IKON has exploited the potential of the Unreal Engine graphics engine to manage the 3D elements, while many of the works, backdrops, and characters have been extrapolated from the original paintings or redrawn and animated by hand. The result is an unedited and unique work of digital art, capable of enhancing Spazzapan's artistic production in a modern and digital view.

VR Corner

The area dedicated to the virtual reality experience includes four workstations, each equipped with an Oculus Quest 2 headset and swivel chair. Ikon also oversaw the setting up of the VR corner and its integration within the museum visit itinerary.

To implement the Tiare Digital Experience, IKON has deployed a team consisting of:

  • Interior Designer
  • Account
  • 3D artist
