Aquileia: a journey through time thanks to Augmented Reality
Aquileia was one of the largest and liveliest cities of the Roman Empire, until the arrival of Attila who destroyed it in the 5th century AD.
Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, today it presents mainly ruins of mosaic floors and traces of walled perimeters.
Produced by IKON for the Aquileia Foundation, Ancient Aquileia 3D is a mobile application for iOS and Android, which features innovative 3D augmented reality features. The app combines 3D images, videos and interactive exploration of the main monuments, turning visitors' devices into "windows in time" and interactive guides.
In 2014, the project won the prestigious World Summit Award (organized within the United Nations) in the Tourism and Culture category.

As they walk through the streets of Aquileia, users receive information about the surroundings and, in an impressive way, they can point their devices and explore virtual reconstructions of ancient buildings thanks to 3D augmented reality.

The IKON team worked closely with archaeologists and experts from the Aquileia Foundation to virtually recreate the city as it appeared in the 4th century AD.
Interactive map and geolocation
The app includes an interactive map of the city that dynamically superimposes the Roman city on the modern city floor.
Tourists who are interested in Aquileia and are planning a visit, can explore the interactive map of the Roman city and navigate through 3D reconstructions enriched by in-depth hotspots.
