CarsoXR, narrative paths from the borderland

Carso XR is the new project developed by IKON for the Carigo Foundation and Intesa Sanpaolo aimed at enhancing the Friuli plateau through digital storytelling: an innovative and engaging approach to narrate the territory and its history, through a sustainable model of tourism, with zero impact, in line with the UN 2030 agenda objectives.
Part of the broader multi-year CariGOGREEN project, Carso XR joins Collio XR and Isonzo XR as a tool for enhancing and promoting the territory of the province of Gorizia.
The new Carso XR app takes full advantage of the potential of modern mobile devices to offer all those who visit the Karst plateau an innovative experience based on Extended Reality (XR): a solution that combines geo-referenced storytelling with digital content that gives life to an immersive and engaging experience.
The app, available in iOS and Android versions, can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and can be used in Italian, English, and Slovenian.

Storytelling Mode

In Storytelling mode, the user can choose between three different narrative paths: two of a historical nature recall the terrible battles of which this land was the scene during the First World War while the third is a story focused on the beauty and uniqueness of the natural heritage, very rich in terms of biodiversity.
Route guidance is managed by a satellite navigation system integrated into the app: the route is displayed on the map and the user receives all the directions in "turn by turn" mode.
Upon reaching specific points along the itinerary, the various chapters of the story are unlocked and the multimedia player is automatically activated which from time to time plays audio content rather than video, AR, or VR.
The goal is to keep the user's attention focused on the surrounding landscape, appreciating its beauty and uniqueness, but at the same time providing a narrative substrate that helps to understand its characteristics and peculiarities in a more profound way, as well as discover the events and historical facts that have marked and characterized this area over the centuries.

The three itineraries

  1. The Arid Casket - The Carso is a rocky plateau for the most part arid, however, like a casket, it contains many natural wonders to be discovered.
  2. The Border - The Carso has always been a borderland, a strategic place and a gateway to enter the territories of the Italian plain, disputed and wounded by bloody conflicts, but also a crossroads of languages, cultures, and peoples of Slavic, German, and Friulian, deeply linked to the Central European tradition.
  3. Ashes in the Wind - The red earth of the Carso brings to mind the bloody battles fought in these places during the First World War together with the mourning for the unknown remains of the thousands of fallen soldiers, scattered here, like ashes in the wind

Exploration mode

Thanks to the Exploration mode, on the other hand, it is possible to quickly know all the points of interest in the area: special thematic filters allow you to focus your search on various types of content and topics (the great war, art and culture, history and traditions, food, and wine, etc. ). There are two viewing modes: the user can explore the area via an interactive map or in Augmented Reality mode, i.e. framing the surrounding landscape with the camera on their smartphone and directly viewing the superimposed points of interest.

Gamification

The use of the XR contents present in different places and the different experiences guarantee the acquisition of points. The completion of individual experiences or the achievement of particular objectives allows for achievements and badges to be obtained as evidence of the level of knowledge of the territory and the objectives of the 2030 Agenda achieved by the user.
