CollioXR, narrative paths in extended reality for sustainable development

Fondazione Carigo and Intesa San Paolo chose IKON as their technological partner to realize the three-year CariGO GREEN³ program, which aims to promote the social and economic development in the Isontino area. The first phase, implemented in 2018, was a pilot project dedicated to the Museum of Monte San Michele, and the second phase focuses on the Collio of Gorizia.
The Collio XR Project is an innovative and engaging approach to share the area and its rich history through sustainable and zero impact tourism. The themes of Agenda 2030 have been condensed into 8 audio-stories which are accompanied by virtual and augmented reality contents and which take place on unique tours in the Collio area. The stories’ genres range from fantasy to reportage, from biographical to thriller and the duration of them varies based on different mileage.
The mobile app, available in Italian and English for both Android and iOS devices, is the real technological heart of the project and exploits the full potential of extended reality (XR): a unique solution that combines geo-referenced storytelling, virtual reality and increased reality, giving life to an immersive, engaging and emotional experience.

Digital storytelling and Soudscapes

The Digital Storytelling experience is based on seven paths for eight stories, which cross eight different historical periods, using eight different narrative styles.
To make the most of the magnificent landscapes of the Collio, the app is mainly based on Soundscapes (texts in voice and music) that accompany users along the routes and are activated automatically based on their GPS position.

Virtual Reality

On the rest areas along the routes, the user is invited to insert their smartphone into a cardboard viewer to enjoy immersive immersive VR contents which includes representations of the settings referring to past, present and future ages.

Augmented Reality

By framing the information panels present along the paths, users can view content in Augmented Reality: static images are transformed into animated videos and three-dimensional objects perfectly inserted in the enviroment enrich the experience and storytelling.

Gamification

The use of XR contents present in the different places and in the different experiences guarantees the acquisition of points. The activation of in-depth information related to narration offers additional scores.
The completion of individual experiences or the achievement of particular objectives unlocks badges as evidence of the level of knowledge of the territory and the objectives of the 2030 Agenda reached by the user.

Interactive map and geolocation

The user sees on the device screen an interactive map where the paths and XR contents can be activated.
Guided along the route by a real satellite navigator integrated in the app, the user gets visual and vocal indications to evaluate their position at any time and identify the correct direction to proceed along the route.
