An app to travel through time and relive the history of Palmanova
Made famous for its particular starry shape, Palmanova is a fortress-city preserved in extraordinary conditions which since 2017 has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Given its historical importance, the Municipality of Palmanova has set up the project "Traveling through time - The Virtual Historical Park of the Ramparts of Palmanova" with the aim of encouraging visitors who frequent Palmanova to enrich their knowledge of the historical-artistic and cultural heritage of the city. Using Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies, IKON has designed and created a web app to involve visitors through digital storytelling: the immersive stories allow users to experience first-hand some salient moments in the history of the city and at the same time provide valuable information about places and characters.
Web XR technology
IKON has designed and created an application based on Web XR technology that offers augmented content distributed along a specific visit itinerary: the visitor can activate the various "episodes" simply by pointing the camera of their device at the appropriate AR-tags positioned on the signage on site. Once the app has been launched, a real time window is activated which offers the visitor the opportunity to explore the surroundings "traveling through time", that is, observing the same landscape in different eras and reliving particular historical moments. The entire experience can also be enjoyed from a PC (possibly equipped with a VR viewer) for all those who cannot visit the city in person but want to get a taste of the history and culture of Palmanova. The municipal administration has also made available free "disposable" VR viewers to be used with your smartphones, allowing a stereoscopic and immersive view of the contents.
Historical reenactments
The augmented contents, usable through the app, are based on 360° videos made utilizing special stereoscopic cameras by the IKON team. The filming, set in specific places along the visit route, includes the performances of various historical re-enactment companies that staged situations of civil and military life in Palmanova between the 17th and 19th centuries.
